Read MoreThe holiday season in Dubai is truly magical—festive lights, social gatherings, and joyful celebrations all around. But if you're a mom of a child with autism, this time of year can feel more overwhelming than joyful. The excitement that fills most homes during Christmas and New Year's can sometimes bring sensory overload, anxiety, and disruption to your child's routine.
As an Autism Mom Coach in Dubai, I work closely with moms like you to help navigate these moments with more ease and less stress. Through my work at Lumina Paths Coaching, I support mothers in understanding and meeting the unique needs of their children with autism in Dubai. Here are five practical tips to help make this season not just tolerable—but meaningful—for your whole family.
1. Do a Pre-Holiday Crosscheck
Before attending any event, take a moment to reach out to the host. Ask about the environment—Will there be loud music? Flashing lights? A big crowd? Share what your child is sensitive to, whether that's hugging, certain smells, or noise levels. A little preparation goes a long way in avoiding sensory overwhelm.
2. Keep It Familiar
New experiences can be unsettling for a child on the autism spectrum. If your child feels most comfortable wearing pajamas or a favorite outfit, it's okay to skip the party attire. Bring along familiar snacks or even a full meal that your child loves. If there will be gift exchanges, share preferences with the host or bring a wrapped gift your child will enjoy to avoid surprises.
3. Practice and Rehearse
Role-playing situations like greeting guests, accepting a gift, or sitting at a table can ease anxiety. Rehearse these scenarios with your child beforehand. Familiarity builds confidence—and even a few dry runs can make a huge difference in how your child copes at the event.
4. Stay Close and Advocate
Your presence is your child's greatest comfort. Let the host know ahead of time that you'll be close by and may step in to support your child as needed. Offer to act as a bridge in communication, especially if your child is nonverbal or shy. It's also okay to ask the host to check in with you before offering new foods or initiating activities.
5. Have a Plan B
Even with all the prep, things can shift quickly. If your child starts to feel overwhelmed, have a quiet space in mind—or even an exit plan. Let the host know beforehand that you may need to take a break or leave early. Flexibility is key, and protecting your child's peace is always the priority.
As moms, we often carry the emotional weight of making holidays perfect for everyone else. But you deserve support, too. Through Autism Coaching in Dubai for Moms, I work with women who want to feel more empowered, more supported, and less alone in this journey.
Let's make this season gentler for your child—and for you.
Warmly,
